Kent and His First Wife Were Neighbors
The talented jockey was married to Sonia Romero from 1990 to 2012. The former couple grew up together as Kent Desormeaux’s ex-wife lived across the street from his house. She gave him a ride to school almost every day. However, despite knowing him since their school days, the ex-duo never proceeded their friendship to the next level.
Sonia did not have her first date with Desormeaux until after he had become a prominent jockey in Maryland. She revealed that she did not want to go out with him as everyone often talked about him, his success, how hothead he was, how much he earned, and the types of cars he drove. She added that, at first, she thought he was someone full of himself.
But after their first date, Sonia realized he was not like that. So then, their relationship proceeded, and on January 12, 1990, Desormeaux tied the knot with Romero. The couple lived happily, enjoying their marital bliss.
However, things took a drastic turn, and on November 13, 2008, Kent Desormeaux’s former wife filed for divorce in Los Angeles County Superior Court, after 18 years of marriage. But, the reason behind their separation remains a mystery. Likewise, most of their divorce proceedings have been kept private. Finally, in 2012, the ex-pair finalized their legal separation.
Sonia and Kent Welcomed Two Children Together
In almost two decades of togetherness, the former couple became the proud parents of two children. In 1993, Kent Desormeaux’s ex-wife gave birth to their son, Joshua Desormeaux. Then, in 1999, they welcomed their second child, Jacob Desormeaux.
Kent Desormeaux’s son, Jacob, was born deaf, and doctors told the family that he would likely lose his vision by early adulthood. Even before his birth, Kent and his former spouse saw evidence that their baby boy would have difficulty with his hearing. So when he was one and a half years old, he had cochlear implants in his ears.
After multiple consults with numerous doctors, Kent’s baby boy was diagnosed with Usher syndrome. By the age of 9, he slowly started to lose sight. Furthermore, Kent Desormeaux’s ex-spouse even launched Eye on Jacob, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting research for the Usher Syndrome treatment.
Kent Found Love Again
Following the divorce, Sonia Romero’s ex-husband found love again with a woman named Rosie Higgins. The couple met when she was working as an exercise rider. In 2013, the duo tied the knot in an intimate ceremony at Gulfstream Park Racing and Casino.
Furthermore, Kent Desormeaux’s wife is also a jockey, and in February 2016, she rode her first career winner at Santa Anita. She achieved a three-length victory with Blue Law in the $19,000 claiming race for lower-level horses. Likewise, in January 2016, they rode against each other, and Kent won.
