- The Japanese composer and actor, born on January 17th, 1952, created diverse styles of music both as a solo artist and as part of the Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO).
- In the 1970s, while he was still studying at university, Ryuichi began pursuing his career as a record producer, arranger, and session musician.
- In 1978 he gained popularity after co-founding YMO, which marked his first big success.
- Simultaneously with being part of the group, he continued creating solos releasing Thousand Knives in that same year where it experimented with fusion melodies.
- Sakamoto continued to create solo albums and collaborate with artists around the world, like David Sylvian, Carsten Nicolai, Youssou N’Dour, and Fennesz.
- His career highlights include composing music for the opening ceremony of the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, Energy Flow becoming Japan’s first instrumental number-one single on the Oricon charts.
- Furthermore, the composer also scored roles in films such as Merry Christmas and Mr. Lawrence, which earned him an Oscar, a BAFTA award, a Grammy award, and two Golden Globes.
- Sadly though, Sakamoto has passed away, leaving an incredible legacy behind after losing his battle with cancer on March 28th, 2023, at age 71 due to renal cancer.
- The news of his death was announced on April 2nd following his funeral service.

The talented composer was married three times throughout his life. His first marriage was to Natsuko Sakamoto, the mother of his first daughter, whose identity has not been revealed.
After ten years together, their marriage came to an end, and they went their separate ways.
