Jesse got together with a few of his fellow writers to discuss the series ending when he started to write season four. He even thought of doing more seasons of the series and turning it into a fun show, but he thought otherwise.
He wanted to do something more complete and go strong, and that was definitely his preference, and he did so.
Armstrong explained himself and thought of keeping the series strong, so he came up with the ending of Succession in season four.
