5 Facts About Very Focused Player Holly Charles’ Career

Holly Charles, commonly known as Nana among her friends, is a cricket player born in Saint George, Grenada, West Indies. She has been playing the sport since the age of 14. Holly Charles’ career has seen many ups and downs, and watching her grow is inspiring.

As a result of her playing career, Holly’s personal and professional life has brought several attention. So, here are five interesting facts about the aspiring cricketer. Keep reading!

5. Her Father Encouraged Her To Play Cricket

As mentioned earlier, Holly started playing cricket at the age of 14. The said sport has been a big part of her life since she was a child. In fact, she was encouraged to learn cricket by her father. Holly Charles’ dad trained her.

Having a supportive family is really a blessing. In this case, the cricketer is really fortunate as her family has always supported her in every possible way. That support and encouragement keep her motivated to excel in her gameplay on the field.

4. Played Track And Field Before Joining The Cricket Team

Although cricket has been a big part of Charles, she has also distributed her focus on other outdoor activities. Born on June 11, 1991, in Saint George, Grenada, she moved to America later. Before migrating, she attended Mac Donald College Secondary School in Grenada and played cricket there. In May 2016, she was a member of Grenada’s Women’s Team, captained by Afy Fletcher.

Since Holly migrated to the USA, she has been following her passion,’ sports.’ She has continuously focused on track and field(Javelin, Short Put Discus). She even started doing “Weight Throw” and has honed her skills ever since. 

Holly has been succeeding in Track & Field. She even clenched victory in the Invitational Girls’ Javelin event at the New York Relays. The student of the Paul Robeson High School in New York, Holly Charles’ career in track & field has made her well-known in the states.

3. Could Not Be Selected Initially

As Holly had a deep interest in cricket, she went to Florida to try out to be a member of the US national team, which was held from January 20th to January 25th, 2019. She amazed the officials at her tryout, scoring 29 runs and taking 4 wickets.

Tryouts were great for her, but Holly Charles’ career could not get its wings then. As per the eligibility rules of the American Cricket Association, a person should have been residing in the US for a minimum of 3 years in order to get on the national team.

At that time, Holly was not living there for 3 years at yet. So, as a result, she could not be selected at first. But the cricketer never gave up and continued her Track & Field events while waiting for the opportunity to be selected.

2. Journey To The National Team Has Been Successful So Far

As mentioned earlier, despite the minor setback, Holly never gave up. Instead, she continued competing in Track & Field and patiently waited for her time. Finally, in February 2021, she, along with Lisa Ramjit, Laasya Mullapudi, and Moksha Chaudhary, among others.

Likewise, in June 2021, Holly Charles’ career saw another huge milestone. She was included in the Eastern squad for the USA Cricket Women’s Eastern and Western Regional Series. Ramjit was the captain of the team. Holly has played for the US national team as a right-arm medium bowler and left-hand batter.

1. Was Granted A Scholarship

In July 2022, Holly was one of the four grantees of USA Cricket’s Official Equipment and Cricket Balls Supplier, Newbery Cricket Sponsors. Along with her, Sasha Vallabhaneni, Pooja Shah, and Trisa Bhima received four full playing kits. In addition, they became Newbery’s sponsored players until the end of 2023.
