Jennette McCurdy’s book I’m Glad My Mom Died provides more information about feuds amongst co-stars, manipulation, and poor set management. Here are some of the most shocking disclosures made by the 30-years old actress through it.
5. Focuses On Her Childhood Trauma
Jennette McCurdy was born Jennette Michelle Faye McCurdy on June 26, 1992, and was brought up in a relatively underprivileged Mormon family in Orange County, California. According to Jennette, her dad Mark McCurdy worked two jobs and was not very emotionally attached.
Later, after Jennette McCurdy’s mom passed away, she discovered that her dad was not her biological father. She grew up with three elder brothers, and her mama homeschooled them. She wrote in her book that her mom, who was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer, abused her emotionally, mentally, and physically.
As a result of her mother pressuring her into acting when she was six years old, the actress acknowledged that she suffered from anxiety and self-hatred. She began to attend therapy regularly after her mother’s death in 2013 from cancer-related complications.
4. Mother Instructed Her To Practice Eating Disorder
Jennette McCurdy’s book I’m Glad My Mom Died revealed that her mom taught her disordered eating so that she could hold off adulthood and keep getting kid roles. The actress struggled for years with anorexia, binge eating, and bulimia to provide for her family.
The actress revealed in an interview that when she was 11 years old, her mother introduced her to calorie restriction. While Jennette McCurdy’s mom encouraged her to eat less and lose weight, the former actress, on the other hand, played the food-obsessed character Sam Puckett on iCarly, and it was confusing for her at the time. McCurdy later disclosed that she could control her eating issues by undergoing two years of intense Dialectical Behavior Therapy, or DBT.
3. Exploited As A Child Actor On The Nickelodeon Series
Jennette McCurdy admitted she was exploited as a kid actor on Nickelodeon’s iCarly and Sam & Cat. Through the book, McCurdy revealed that she was requested to be pictured in a bikini during a wardrobe fitting and urged to consume alcohol by a person she called the Creator.
The actress noted that her mom was there, but she did not act and instead told her daughter that this was the price of entertainment success. She blamed the television industry and her mom for failing to protect her.
McCurdy says that Nickelodeon tried to pay her $300,000 to keep her alleged exploits to herself after that program was canceled. However, she declined the offer.
2. Also Wrote That She Didn’t Like Her Co-star Ariana Grande
Jennette McCurdy expressed her dislike for working alongside Ariana Grande on the iCarly spin-off Sam & Cat. It was because the young pop sensation was always taking time off to concentrate on her music career.
McCurdy stated that she was jealous of Grande since the musician had a much simpler upbringing than hers. The actress also admits that she had to decline numerous projects to act outside the show. However, Ariana was allowed to miss episodes of Sam & Cat for her music projects.
In Jennette McCurdy’s book, she revealed that broke after Ariana talked about spending the previous evening playing charades at Tom Hanks‘ house. She loved Tom, and from that moment on, she did not like her.
